Stun Guns

SABRE stun guns are rated by microcoulombs, the only true measure of stun gun strength. Every model delivers at least 1.0 µC, the charge the National Institute of Justice calls intolerable pain, in tactical and compact designs with built-in LED flashlights.

Why SABRE Stun Guns

Strength You Can Measure, Not Marketing You Can't

A stun gun emits an electrical charge that causes pain and disorientation on contact, giving you a window to get away. Many brands advertise millions of volts, but 30,000 volts is the physical maximum for a standard stun gun, and voltage does not indicate strength. Microcoulombs (µC) do. The National Institute of Justice found subjects reported pain at 0.5 µC and intolerable pain at 1.0 µC. Every SABRE stun gun delivers at least 1.0 µC, verified by Rassettica, an independent conducted energy weapon testing lab, and the charge is published on every product page.

Stun guns are legal with restrictions in most states but cannot be sold in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Michigan, and some cities including Chicago. Check your state's stun gun laws before you order.

Quick answers on strength, use, charging, travel, and laws. Full answers live on the stun gun FAQ page.

Strength & effectiveness

4 questions
How many volts does a SABRE stun gun have?

Voltage does not indicate stun gun strength. Microcoulombs do, because they measure charge (current × time). SABRE publishes the independently tested µC rating under Product Overview on every stun gun page instead of an inflated voltage number.

How much charge does it take to stop an attacker?

According to the National Institute of Justice, subjects reported pain on average at 0.5 µC and intolerable pain at 1.0 µC. Every SABRE stun gun delivers at least 1.0 µC, and the Tactical Series and Pen models deliver 2.5 to 4.2 µC.

Do stun guns really work for self-defense?

Yes, on contact. A 5-second touch to the upper hip, shoulder, or below the rib cage causes confusion and disorientation that lasts a few seconds. The loud crackle of the probes alone can deter an attacker before contact. Use that window to escape and call for help. Read more.

What is the difference between a stun gun and a TASER®?

A stun gun must touch the attacker and delivers pain through two metal probes. A TASER® fires probes from a distance and causes neuromuscular incapacitation. Stun guns are compact, palm-sized, and far less expensive. Full comparison.

Using & charging

4 questions
Where should I make contact?

Three areas of maximum effectiveness: the upper hip, the shoulder, or just below the rib cage. The shock only incapacitates for a few seconds, so move toward safety immediately after use.

How long do I hold the stun gun on an attacker?

About 5 seconds of direct contact causes most attackers to experience confusion or disorientation. Once the threat is interrupted, escape and call for help rather than staying engaged.

How long do I charge my stun gun?

Rechargeable models need an initial 12-hour charge, then 4 to 5 hours weekly. Battery models use the batteries listed in the manual; replace them when the test spark weakens. Charge it as soon as you unbox it so it is ready when you need it.

How often should I test it?

Periodically, in quick half-second bursts, to confirm it fires and holds a charge. Longer test discharges can damage the unit. Practice drawing it from your holster or bag so the motion is automatic under stress.

Laws & travel

3 questions
Are stun guns legal in my state?

Legal with restrictions in most states. Sales are prohibited in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Michigan, and in some cities including Chicago. Other states add age, permit, or ID requirements, and SABRE cannot ship to some areas. It is your responsibility to know your state, county, and city laws. See the state list.

Is my stun gun TSA approved?

TSA allows stun guns in checked baggage only, never carry-on, and each airline may add its own restrictions. Check the TSA guidance and your carrier before you fly.

You can't ship to my state. Where can I buy one?

Where online sale is restricted but possession is legal, SABRE stun guns are carried by authorized local retailers. Find where to buy stun guns near you.
